Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay Trio

Type of product?

A trio of masks that transform into a foaming cleanser upon application of water.

What does it claim?

All three will remove makeup, absorb oil, and ‘detoxify’ your skin. French clay cleanses pores and exfoliates. Hydrogen mineral water deeply cleanses pores and gently exfoliates. Nymphaea Alba Flower Extract tones skin. Skin is brighter, evenly toned, and surface dead skin cells are removed.

Calming White contains chamomile to calm.

Moisturizing Pink contains lotus flower extract to hydrate.

Refreshing Green contains tea tree, eucalyptus, and lemongrass extract to control excess sebum.

How should I use it?

Recommended as a once-daily mask and cleanser. Spread a liberal amount on skin. Let dry, about three to five minutes. Splash with tepid water to create a foaming lather. Rinse.

The verdict:

These are such odd—ingenious but odd—products. All three are effective at what they promise: makeup is removed, oil is absorbed and skin feels cleaner. Surprisingly skin is not left dehydrated to the touch, which is odd considering these contain both French clay and SLS. The fact that they transform from a clay mask to a cleanser is magical and solves that age-old question: Do I cleanse before I use a clay mask? Won’t that dry my skin? In this case, no worry; one step and you are done.

I did notice a small difference between the three clays, despite on the whole them sharing a common formulation. The Moisturizing Pink was surprisingly hydrating and was my favourite of the three. The Refreshing Green was nice as well, but I really did not see a difference in blemishes. Then again my oil production is quite normal so the sebum-regulating ingredients may have been superfluous. The Calming White was similar to the Moisturizing Pink. Out of the three the Moisturizing Pink was my favourite as it both cleansed the skin and hydrated; a tall order for a clay mask.

On the whole, however, these are still odd products. As they dry in under five minutes you will not find that luxurious feeling one normally experiences with a clay mask. These are, however, rather effective at deep cleansing and their compact tube design makes them wonderful for travel. If you want the effects of a clay mask but without the hassle I highly recommend Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay Trio. You can also purchase these individually, in which case I would recommend the Moisturizing Pink for all but the driest of skin.

Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Trans-Foam Clay Trio is available at Sephora for about $44. You can find the Moisturizing Pink—and others—individually for about $19.
